FUN STUFF
If you like fake news with an attitude, you'll love The Onion. Published weekly, it reads like a real paper, but is a lot funnier. Content can get racy at times, so this site is recommended for people 18 and older. If you're easily offended, try Hallmark.com instead. The Onion.
"Motivational" posters and graphics have been popular for awhile now. You'll see them at gyms, health clubs and other places where people need encouragement. It was only a matter of time before someone came up with a cure for over-hyped motivational techniques. If you're tired of "feeling the burn," you'll want to race over to: Demotivators from Despair, Inc.
The Sacramento Bee has done the world a favor with their comprehensive humor site called "Smile.com." It collects the latest in weird news, comics, columnists such as Dave Barry and more. Each day's issue also features last night's best jokes from Letterman, Conan and Leno. Letterman's Top 10 is included. Laugh yourself sick at:
Smile!
What good is a multimedia-enriched browser if you can't show it off to your friends and coworkers? If you're using a version 4 browser from either Netscape or Microsoft, go to Macromedia's Shockrave site for the latest streaming media from Dr. Katz, South Park, Dilbert, Peanuts and more. It's live cartoons right on the web! If you don't have the components needed to view this stuff (mainly the latest Shockwave plugins) the site will get them for you. Check out the mayhem at:
Macromedia's Shockrave.
Robert X. Cringely is simply the Net's best commentator... period. He's now the official PBS technology spokesman, and his "Triumph of the Nerds" specials have been one of the biggest hits in PBS' history. Read Cringely's weekly take on what's going on with computers - including regular skewerings of Microsoft - at:
I, Cringely.
Do you like puns and wordplay? You'll be in heaven as soon as you hit Richard Lederer's "Verbivore" site. He's been the guest columnist for the Smithsonian and Scientific American for more years than anyone can remember. Catch all the greatest Verbivore hits at:
Richard Lederer's Verbivore.
Truly one of the greatest wastes of time in Web history, "The Dialectizer" is a classic example of how weird the Web can be. As in BabelFish, you paste English text (or a web page) into a box, but instead of translations into other languages, you can translate into other Dialects: Red Neck, Jive, Cockney, Elmer Fudd, Swedish Chef, Moron and Pig Latin. For example, we took the phrase "We hold these truths to be self evident: that all men are created equal." and translated it into Red Neck. Here's what came out: "We hold these truths t'be se'f evident: thet all min are created equal, ah reckon." You've gotta see it to believe it!
